Redemption by Knight-Dawn Redemption by Knight-Dawn
My entry for this year's contest at :iconclubkenshin: for the sketch category. I meant for it to be in the "solid" category, but it took a lot longer to even make the sketch version than I thought it would and the deadline is tomorrow... And today was actually my last day to be able to work on it.

Anyway, the three themes for the contest are Honor, Courage, or Redemption... and while I chose "Redemption" as my theme I think the others apply as well.

I tried to capture the most significant moments of the journey Kenshin wandered over his life... right until the moment when I believe he would truly have felt redeemed: when he held his newborn son Kenji for the very first time.

He went through so much blood and tears until that moment... But I'm sure he cried tears of happiness when he became a father.

Because, after so many years atoning for all the lives he took as an assassin... in that moment, he held a life that he actually helped create.

While it might be sketchy in appearance, I feel that the raw emotions I felt while drawing this came through. That's how my sketches usually are, and I like them for that reason.

Hope you guys like it too!

I like ideas although it might just be me, but some aren't immediately clear. Is that Tomoe's grave on the left? And something seems to be flowing from the second one although i can't understand what it is. Is it blood?

Well, I intended for it to be a bit ambiguous and hazy, and for one image to flow into the next.

In the far left, the image is Shinta standing before the graves of the women that died protecting him from the bandits (right before Hiko found him) and the crosses are two of the graves he dug for the bandits.

The second picture is Kenshin in his days as Battousai... so the dark stains flowing across the page from there on are indeed supposed to be the blood of all the people he killed in those days. Tomoe's hair in the picture right next to that actually is supposed to appear to be part of that as well, almost becoming a waterfall of blood into the river flowing behind him in his shadow...

But, as time goes on and he took the vow to never kill, the stains become fainter until his shadow is all they are. And the stains don't touch Shinta at all because he was innocent at that time.

Oh nice. Don't take me wrongly, I really like the ideas and I know that it is just a sketch, but making it slightly cleaner would help in getting the idea across better. The expressions are really clear and well drawn, but the overall flow could have been neater, for example it is not immediately clear (to me at least) that Kenshin is holding a dying Tomoe in the second panel because Kenshin's arms don't stand out as arms; at first I thought those were just random lines.

Sorry for the late reply, but I've been pretty busy. ^^;

I completely agree. I want to take this sketch to the next level and make it cleaner... And you're right, the flow of the picture could be better overall.

I'll do better next time! :)

I completely understand.

I'm sure you'll improve very quickly now, and I can't wait to see what you will do with your newfound knowledge.
